The Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime has detailed the disturbing role of Asian diplomats and crime syndicates in rhino poaching. The new report said corruption in South Africa and Mozambique contributed to Asian diplomats paying off officials to avoid prosecution. Among many sordid details, it noted syndicates like the Xaysavang Network exploited legal trophy hunts to obtain rhino horn using young women from Thailand, workers from strip clubs and massage parlors, who posed as hunters.

The non-profit organization has a unique way of both tackling food waste and supporting those in need of food, plsu there is an event this evening that benefits them. Executive Director Ku'ulei Williams speaks with HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence.

Legendary musician David Crosby is about to tour the islands, starting Saturday at the Blue Note in Waikiki, before more dates around the state.  He spoke to HPR ATC host Dave Lawrence about it.

Today we continue our ongoing series within Helping Hand about the rapidly escalating rhino extinction crisis, a poaching epidemic that has reclassified the rhinoceros as among the most vulnerable animals on earth. Brutal killings of two to three animals happen every day; without immediate intervention, wild rhinos are forecast to be wiped from the planet, almost entirely due to demand for rhino horn in just two countries: Vietnam and China.

John Hammond is touring the islands now, playing the Big Island tonight, followed by dates on  Maui, Kauai and then back in Honolulu next week. He took time for a conversation in the HPR Atherton Performing Arts Studio with local ATC Host Dave Lawrence.

Since 1969, Kool & the Gang have explored jazz, funk, soul, R&B, rock and psychedelia, at times, combining these varying music forms. A previous guest on ATC during their genre-mixing tour opening for the  2012 David Lee Roth Van Halen reunion tour, Robert “Kool” Bell returns to speak with local ATC Host Dave Lawrence ahead of their June 7th Honolulu show at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.

This week on Helping Hand we’re learning about Lokelani 'Ohana, whose mission is to create socially therapeutic programs for adults with developmental disabilities. Listeners may recall when legendary entertainer Kris Kristofferson was on ATC, promoting a benefit concert he was doing for them.

Sad news today in the Aloha State as legendary local entertainer Jimmy Borges has passed. He was 80. Jimmy Borges was born in Kalihi and had music around him from the time he was a little kid, with his pop playing the ‘ukulele and piano and mom listening to Big Band records. It would have a profound influence on a guy who’d go on to be among the most respected musicians ever in the Aloha State. The man who’d become known to many as Hawai‘i’s Frank Sinatra passed on yesterday, according to news reports that quoted his family as the source.
