FROM THE TOP Returns to Hawaiʻi, Casting for Local Talent

Hawaiʻi Tour, Winter 2016

Hawaiʻi Public Radio is proud to present the return of From the Top for two recordings before live audiences in Hawaiʻi.

The hit NPR radio program (airs Saturdays on HPR-1 at 10 a.m.) showcasing America’s best young classical musicians with Host Christopher O’Riley is scheduled to record before a live audience on November 30, 2016 on Hawaiʻi Island (location to be announced), and on December 2, 2016 at Blaisdell Concert Hall in Honolulu.

MUSICIANS 8 – 18 YEARS OLD WANTED

The showʻs producers are currently seeking Hawaiʻi-based talent to feature in these presentations. From the Top is solely responsible for the selection of the showʻs talent. Application and scholarship information is available online at www.fromthetop.org/casting.

From the Top welcomes audition entries from young classical musicians, ages 8 to 18 who have not graduated from high school. While the show focuses mostly on the western classical repertoire, it has on occasion featured other non-pop genres, especially if that genre connects with the heritage of the region in which they are recording. Solo performers on all instruments, composers and vocalists, as well as instrumental or vocal ensembles are welcome.

APPLICATION DEADLINE for Hawaiʻi recordings: July 29, 2016

HPR OFFERS RECORDING SESSION

From the Top requires, as part of the application, a quality recording by the musician. As a service to our community, HPR will make available its Atherton Studio at 738 Kāheka Street, the Bösendorfer concert grand piano in the Atherton, and a sound engineer for recording sessions for those auditioning for From the Top. The limited number of half-hour recording sessions are by appointment only.

HPR audition recording session: Saturday, June 25, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Reservations: call (808) 955-8821 during business hours

All appointments are currently filled; however, we are accepting a waiting list and those on it will be called on a first-come-first-served basis should there be any cancellations.

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

Of the more than 100 musicians chosen to appear on the radio program every year, approximately 20 will receive Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Awards in support of furthering their musical education. These up to $10,000 scholarships are given to deserving young classical musicians between the ages of 8-18 who have high levels of artistic achievement, demonstrated financial need, and a solid academic record.

Please help spread the word about this exciting opportunity!
