ABOUT THE SHOW:
Bytemarks Cafe is a one-hour radio magazine that showcases the innovation and creativity in Hawaii's tech community. Hosted by geeks in residence Burt Lum and Ryan Ozawa, program's purpose is to raise awareness of the tech economy and to engage the listener in the discussion. The show encourages two-way conversation through audience call-ins, emails and blog comments. Bytemarks Cafe will leverage the Internet and social media technologies to extend the conversation well beyond the one-hour time slot with the intent of building and nurturing this vibrant and vital community in Hawaii. Both Burt Lum and Ryan Kawailani Ozawa have earned the title "geek."
ABOUT THE HOSTS:
Back in high school at Iolani, Burt Lum's nickname was Fortran, after a
then popular programing language. He survived high school geekiness only to
end up in college as an electrical engineering nerd. After more 25 years in
Hawaii's ever-evolving tech sector, he has returned to geekdom. He has had
the fortune to work in the dynamic telecom industry, helping to build one of
Hawaii's first internet data centers. His tech exploits have taken him as
far as Mongolia, Fiji, Palau, Alaska and the Marshall Islands. Between 1998
and 2004 he authored a weekly tech column in the Honolulu Advertiser called "Bytemarks." Finding new ways to foster the human connection has been a
constant motivator. "These technologies continue to have great impact on our
daily lives," he says. His hope is to help broaden the awareness of tech in
Hawaii and to celebrate the innovation that exists here.
Ryan Kawailani Ozawa wears the label "geek" with pride. He's
immersed himself in new technologies and online communities since the days
before the web. From dial-up BBSes to the shiny new "Web 2.0" frontier, Ryan
has long embraced and evangelized the ways in which technology can bring
people together. There's nary a gadget he hasn't tested, nor a website he
hasn't explored. Ryan especially enjoys linking traditional and new media,
going from managing a daily newspaper to producing audio and video shows in
his den. A lucky husband and proud father of three, he holds a degree in
Journalism from the University of Hawaii.
