Music and Stories For the Holidays

DECEMBER 21

6:00 am (HPR-2):  The Christmas Revels. A musical celebration of the winter holidays – Christmas, the Solstice, Hanukkah, St. Lucia's Day, The Feast of Fools, New Year's and Epiphany/Twelfth Night.

3:00 pm (HPR-1): Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir: The world-renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir with touching arrangements of familiar carols, and lesser-known melodies that are fast becoming the new classics.

7:00 pm (HPR-2):  Hannakuh Lights 2016. A perennial NPR favorite with all new Hanukkah stories. Authors include R.L. Maizes, Lia Pripstein, Elisa Albert, and Ellen Orleans. Hosted by Susan Stamberg and Murray Horwitz.

10:00 pm (HPR-2):  Paul Winter Solstice. On the darkest night of the year, we head back to New York's Cathedral of St. John the Divine to hear The Paul Winter Consort and the glorious Cathedral Pipe Organ. Hosted by John Schaefer.

 

DECEMBER 22

6:00 am (HPR-2): A Christmas Celtic Sojourn 2016. Brian O’Donovan’s Christmas-time live version of the show draws on Celtic, Pagan, and Christian traditions to celebrate the music of this season.

7:00 am (HPR-2): In Italia: A Renaissance Christmas. Wonderful sixteenth-century Christmas music from the Venetian world of Giovanni Bassano and Gioseffo Zarlino, to the Milan of Franchinus Gaffurius, and to the Naples of Diego Ortiz. Music of Michael Praetorius provides a glorious grand finale.

10:00 am (HPR-2):  Tinsel Tales 3. Extraordinary Christmas stories that transport you to unexpected places.

3:00 pm (HPR-1): Hollywood Holiday:  A one-hour retrospective of some of Hollywood’s most cherished Christmas-themed movies.

10:00 pm (HPR-2): Echoes Christmas.  Music from Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Kate Bush, George Winston, Loreena McKennitt and more in this chilled soundscape for the season.

 

DECEMBER 23

2:00 pm (HPR-2): Jonathan Winters’ A Christmas Carol. Master comedian Jonathan Winters presents a distinctive reading of Dickens' holiday classic.

3:00 pm (HPR-1):  Advent Voices: An opportunity to reflect, with gorgeous, contemplative music relating to the Advent season.

 

DECEMBER 24

10:00 am (HPR-1): A Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols:  The legendary Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols service of biblical readings and music, hosted by Michael Barone.  Broadcast live from the King’s College in Cambridge, England.

 

DECEMBER 25

9:00 am (HPR-1): The Rose Ensemble: Live in Concert: Christmas in Baroque Malta:  A seasonal program of glorious music from Italy, preserved in the Cathedral archives on the Island of Malta, now being heard for the first time in hundreds of years.

 

10:00 am (HPR-1):  St. Olaf Christmas Special:  One of the nation’s most cherished holiday celebrations featuring the 500 student musicians in five choirs, and the St. Olaf Orchestra.  Hosted by Alison Young.

1:00 pm (HPR-1):  Hawaii Youth Symphony Winter Concert recorded live at the Blaisdell Concert Hall December 4 2016.

10:00 pm (HPR-2):   Echoes Sonic Seasonings

DECEMBER 27

10:00 pm (HPR-2):   Joy to the World: A Holiday in Pink
