AG: Progress on Hawaii Sexual Assault Kit Inventory

Three out of four state counties have now submitted a record detailing the number of untested rape kits. That’s according to the Attorney General’s office who released the inventories from Maui, Kaua‘i and Hawai‘i county police departments.

All counties failed to meet the September 1st deadline, part of a new law passed earlier this year requiring inventories of untested kits.

The county reports show a large majority of rape kits remain untested, some even dating back to the 1990s. On Kaua‘i, about a third of sexual assault kits have been tested, while on Maui that number is less than 10-percent. On the Big Island, a little more than 300 untested kits remain in storage.

The Honolulu Police Department, which has the largest inventory, is the only county who still hasn’t submitted a final count. A spokesperson with the Attorney General’s office expects it will be completed soon.

All four inventories will be included in a final report to the legislature in December.
