The Blood Bank of Hawai‘i is asking the public to increase their donations. Supplies of O-positive and O-negative blood in the islands have fallen to a critical level with less than a days’ worth on reserve due to a busy holiday weekend and adjustment to the blood bank’s new location.
To ensure enough blood is stocked- nearly 200 donors are needed every day in Hawai‘i. Basic requirements to give blood are good health… be at least eighteen-years-old… and no lighter than 110 pounds.
Randal Covin is the Medical Director of The Blood Bank of Hawai‘i. He says those with type O blood, sometimes called “universal donors” are needed more than ever.
