Bridging the Gap ~ February 28th, 2018: Music from the Rising Sun

Tonight on Bridging the Gap i'm focusing on Jazz from Japan...a country that has turned out an awful lot of good music, but is often overlooked for whatever reason.  A lot of the show will be centered around a new compilation released by BBE records entitled "J-Jazz, Deep Modern Jazz from Japan1969-1984" which features some incredibly hard to find and forgotten recordings. I'll warn you here, that a lot of the songs are pretty long, sometimes pushing 10 minutes in length, so it's a good show to really strap on the headphones... and slip into the music.

Nick Yee’s passion for music developed at an early age, as he collected jazz and rock records pulled from dusty locations while growing up in both Southern California and Honolulu. In college he started DJing around Honolulu, playing Jazz and Bossa Nova sets at various lounges and clubs under the name dj mr.nick. He started to incorporate Downtempo, House and Breaks into his sets as his popularity grew, eventually getting DJ residences at different Chinatown locations. To this day, he is a fixture in the Honolulu underground club scene, where his live sets are famous for being able to link musical and cultural boundaries, starting mellow and building the audience into a frenzy while steering free of mainstream clichés.
