Musicians Chucky Boy Chock, Jack Johnson and Paula Fuga during a jam session on board Hokulea. They recently released a single, Na Ho?okele Opiopio, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the voyaging canoe.

H?k?le‘a has returned to the ocean, as it celebrates 40 years of sailing. Over the decades, artists and musicians have been inspired by the traditional Hawaiian voyaging canoe. As part of our ongoing series, H?k?le‘a: Voyage of Aloha, HPR’s Molly Solomon checked in with master navigator Bruce Blankenfeld to share songs of H?k?le‘a.

H?k?le‘a will stay in Auckland, New Zealand for the next month, before she departs for Australia in April, leaving the Pacific Ocean for the first time.

The Polynesian Voyaging Society has also partnered with Jack Johnson in a special online crowd sourcing project to help raise funds for the Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage. You can find more information and listen to a preview of the song, Na Ho?okele Opiopio, here.
