U.S. Congressman Mark Takai died this morning after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Takai’s office confirmed he passed away at his home, surrounded by family.  Two months ago, the 49-year old lawmaker announced he would not seek re-election in November so that he could focus on his health issues.

Condolences have been pouring in from elected officials and others across the state.  Governor David Ige said “Mark humbly and effectively served the people of his state House and Congressional districts. In the often tumultuous world of politics, he has been a shining example of what it means to be a public servant.”  Senator Brian Schatz said “This is a sad day for all of Hawai‘i.”  House Speaker Joseph Souki said “Mark was a thoughtful and caring public servant and a good friend to all of us in the State House. To say that he will be missed is not just a cliché but a heavy and sad reality.”

Arrangements for a memorial service are pending.
