Two separate education reform initiatives are working their way through the DOE

Many educators were very happy to see the federal directive, No Child Left Behind get left behind last year when President Obama signed the Every Student Succeeds Act. The ESSA gives more control over school systems to the states. Since last summer, Governor Ige’s ESSA team has held statewide meetings to gather public input.  What emerged is a blueprint for a long-term plan for Hawaii’s schools. and it was presented this week to the states Board of Education. Darrell Galera led the Governor’s team and now also sits on the BOE.

Toshiro Mifune circa 1954

Toshiro Mifune is one of the great heroic actors in cinema, able to transform himself into a warrior, a king, a crazy loner or a compassionate doctor without ever descending into caricature. If his characters have a unifying trait, it’s their complexity. There’s always something going on behind the eyes and the viewer can’t take his eyes off him. Steve Okazaki is the director of Mifune: The Last Samurai, a documentary that will be screened tonight in Honolulu, and he’s on the line with us now.
