The USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor

This week’s 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor brings with it recollections of Hawaii families and the now few survivors of the raid. But for many Americans of Japanese ancestry born just after the war, it also spotlights the seminal event that shaped their lives. Well into adulthood and over 20 years after the1988 US apology for Japanese internment, Carole Hayashino visited the World War Two Valor in the Pacific National Monument just five years ago. It was the first time the native Californian had been there since the vacations to visit Hawai family in her youth. That alone may not be so remarkable, but Carole Hayshino is the Executive Director of the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii. We sat down to talk about why it took her so long to visit the memorial.

It’s a month after Election Day, and Donald Trump is making an even larger round of victory rallies plus the tempest over Taiwan... for supporters of the European Union there’s a step forward, and one step back…and then, there is the anniversary of Pearl Harbor...just some of the stories on the mind of News Analyst Neal Conan, who joins us, as he does most Tuesday from his Mac nut farm on the big island.
