Around elections and legislative sessions, we often hear criticism about the lack of open government. But what does open government actually mean - and under what circumstances is it effective? A recent Brookings Institution study tried to answer those questions in practical terms. Contributing editor Neal Milner reviewed the research that provides a scorecard and it’s different from other snapshots of the long view.

Film editing has gotten easier over the years but still represents a significant challenge for most filmmakers.

Film-making is a collaborative art -- no one person can be responsible for every aspect of a movie -- and some of its component tasks are designed not to call attention to themselves.  Film editing can make or break a production, and Tom Galli, who’s offering a workshop in the art of editing this evening, is in our studio this morning.

Marine Corps Base Hawaii occupies the Mokapu Peninsula on Oahu's windward coast.

Fears of toxic soil at Marine Corp Base Hawaii have more families joining legal efforts to have those claims recognized.  There are now 64 families suing over what they say has percolated into their lives for at least 10 years. Civil Beat reporter Chad Blair has the reality check.

The Surgeon General's report urges a new approach to dealing with substance addiction, including alcohol, opioids and other drugs.

When we first talked about the Surgeon General’s report, Facing Addiction in America, the response within the treatment community was jubilant. Historic was a word frequently used; it was the first comprehensive report on addiction. Now a month later, those who work with addicts and binge drinkers are also buoyed by yesterday’s signing of the 21st Century Cures Act.  Taken together, the approach could fuel a bipartisan movement to integrate and lengthen care - and pay for it. Alan Johnson President & CEO of Hina Mauka, a drug and alcohol treatment facility and the Chair of the Hawaii Substance Abuse Coalition joins us.

Alpacas are growing in popularity with ranchers due to their mild disposition and good health.

If you were to drive by Jenny Brundage’s farm in Ahualoa, on Hawaii Island, you might think you’d taken a wrong turn and ended up in Peru.  Jenny raises alpaca, a scaled-down relative of llamas with a much better disposition that have been domesticated for thousands of years. They’re prized for their wool, and Jenny’s on the phone to tell us what her life is like.
