Bill 38 (Plastic Bag Bill) Loopholes & Background: Suzanne Frazer
A law that a lot of people on O’ahu have been waiting for goes into effect today: Bill 38 bans most types of plastic bags in the City and County of Honolulu, but there are exceptions. Those exceptions are troubling to Suzanne Frazer, the Co-founder of Beach Environmental Awareness Campaign Hawai`i (B.E.A.C.H.). She joined the show to talk about the lengthy effort it took to get us here and potential effect of loopholes in the bill.

Artists of Hawai‘i 2015: Healoha Johnston
Contemporary art is not created in a vacuum. Local, national, and even global issues can affect our daily lives, perceptions, and how we view the world. It’s that inspiration which artists use as a canvas to showcase their emotions about the world around them. Curator Healoha Johnston knows what makes art happen, and she joined the show to talk about the of the Arts of Hawaii exhibition at the Honolulu Museum of Art. The exhibition opens up tomorrow.

Possible Veto of Sex Trafficking Bill: Kathy Xian
As we were reminded in yesterday’s Civil Beat discussion of Governor Ige’s planned vetoes, Hawaii remains the only state without a sex trafficking law. The governor has said the bill, as written, is untenable, with loopholes that could make law enforcement’s job more difficult. That’s troubling to Kathryn Xian of the Pacific Alliance to Stop Slavery, who worked long and hard for the passage of SB 265.
