It's midweek and maybe you think you deserve a bit of break. Maybe that means a take out run tonight... possibly a stop at your favorite Chinese restaurant. Wherever you find yourself in Hawaii or on the mainland, it's a good bet you'll have a lot of choices and for that you can thank the politicians of the mid 19th century. Contributing editor Neal Milner joined the show to explain.

The blacksmith was once a central figure in rural life and you couldn’t get much done without him.  The skills go way beyond shoeing horses and one local school has built them into its curriculum.   Phil Dwyer is a resident blacksmith at the Honolulu Waldorf School, and he joined us this morning in our studios.

Looking out at Oz, Dorothy says those famous words,"Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore." Looking out over Hawaii, many folks are saying we're not in 1961 anymore. That was the year Hawaii passed its land use law and changes in the state since then have brought about issues never envisioned half a century ago. In February of 2014, the state office on planning convened a task force to look at Hawaii's land use system. The draft review was released this month. The public comment period will end on the 31st and if how Hawaii uses its Urban, Agricultural, Conservation, and Rural land hasn't been on your radar, Sierra club Hawaii chapter chairman David Frankel joined the show to go over some reasons why you might want to give it a look.

Are the women who perform in burlesque shows exercising their freedom or are they celebrating a world where their freedom has been taken away – a world where men see women as objects, and use them accordingly?   For Laura Crittendon, who performs with her Hawaii Island troupe Pin Up Burlesque as Miss Ginger Sassafras, the art of the tease is a celebration of her freedom to express herself.   She sees her work as a vehicle to encourage women to do the same.
