There are fewer than three weeks to go until this election is over, some people would say mercifully over, meanwhile news agencies  are pumping out the polls. Depending on your perspective, what you see may make you confident or concerned about your candidate. But do you know the assumptions that go into polling? We called contributing editor, Neal Milner - he’s traveling this week - and we asked him about some new research that shines a brighter light on those assumptions. And why you might want to check your emotions when you check the polls.

Paniolos corralling cattle in Kailua-Kona

When cattle started to run wild on Hawaii Island in the early 19th Century, the kingdom needed help, which it got from Mexican vaqueros… This pioneering cowboys brought their guitars, and with them, a culture was born.  Today the paniolo tradition is still very much with us, and it’s being celebrated this weekend with the Hot Club of Hulaville’s Paniolo Roadhouse Opry concert at the Honolulu Museum of Art. The show has an all-star cast, here represented by Sonny Silva and Rachel Gonzales.

The internment of Japanese-Americans during the Second World War is one of the shameful episodes of US history, and like all such episodes, it should never be forgotten.   We lose something important when we whitewash our history, even if the memories we awaken can make us uncomfortable. Carole Hayashino is the president and executive director of the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i  -- which will open the new Honouliuli National Monument JCCH Education Center on Saturday
