Between 500-800 lanternfish and squid were found dead or dying near Nawiliwili on Kauai. That’s according to Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources.
Frazer McGilvray works in the DLNR’s Division of Aquatic Resources. He says they’ve partnered with U-S Geological Survey biologists to collect samples to identify potential causes.
The department is asking for the public to help determine how widespread the problem is. Anyone who sees dead or dying marine life on nearby beaches should report the incident to the Eyes of the Reef Network.
If specimens are present on Kauai, please call the Division of Aquatic Resources at 645-0532 or 482-4297.
In online reports, the public should make sure to include:
· name/contact information
· location
· date
· what type of animal
· how many animals
· over what period of time (how long was your walk, swim, etc.)
· whether photos are available
Photos cannot be attached to the online form. Please submit photos to: RRCPCoordinator@eyesofthereef.org with the information listed above.
