Spontaneous street performances abound at Hallowbaloo in Honolulu.

Lahaina used to host Hawai‘i’s undisputed best Halloween party, but changes there and a Chinatown upstart have swung the tide toward Honolulu.  HPR’s Noe Tanigawa reports Hallowbaloo, now eight years along, is drawing the capitol district into the party this year, setting the stage for even more excitement and revelry.

On the Hallowbaloo website, there are guides to plenty of parking, music and entertainment line ups, plus more on the Hallowbaloo Marathon (one mile) which benefits your favorite nonprofit, including Marks’ Garage.

The Hallowbaloo Ball is new this year, a costume ball inside the Hawai‘i State Art Museum with access to the backlit glass dancefloor and sculpture garden.  Chinatown’s best restaurants, including Grondin, Pig and the Lady, Livestock, and more, will offer grazing stations.  From the second level balcony, ball goers are promised the best view of main stage entertainment on the Hisam front lawn.

Inevitably, HPR denizens, nun-for-a-night Nicholas Yee and Father Casey Harlow, blessed Hallowbaloo 2014 with their presence.

The Hallowbaloo Street Festival on Richards Street and on the Hisam lawn runs from 5:30 to 10pm.  Club Hallowbaloo runs from 9pm to 2am, linking eight Chinatown venues including the new craft brew pub, Square Barrels.

Hallowbaloo Kanikapila is a free acoustic concert on the grass near Kapi'olani Bandstand on Sunday, November 1st, from 3-6pm.
