More on the opera:
Written by Adelheid Wette (1858-1916) with music by composed by Engelbert Humperdinck (1854-1921), Hansel & Gretel is a familiar adaption of the Brothers Grimm tale. Adelheid wrote her version of the story in 1890 and asked her brother Engelbert to write the music. Originally intended as an amusement for Adelheid’s own small children and the enjoyment of close family, the story was so charming and the music captured the qualities of the text so well, that the songs were incorporated into a larger work with great success.
