Following Up: Fighting to Dance on Maui

All this week, HPR News is taking another look at stories large and small that we’ve covered over the past year or so, in a series we’re calling “Following Up.”

Last year - dance enthusiasts on Maui challenged a state law which bans dancing inside of bars and nightclubs.  According to the rule - movement is only allowed inside a designated dance area and people outside the perimeter are advised to keep still.  Patrons violating the law were removed from clubs and the establishment was often fined by the liquor commission. Though the rule exists across the state, only Maui County actively enforced the ban – prompting a local advocate group to challenge the law.

Last June - Governor Ige signed a bill which required the liquor commission to clarify or amend their rules on dancing.  Liquor commission officials are expected to clarify their definition of dance as early as tomorrow.  J?v? J?v? is the founder of Maui Dance Advocates.

Maui Dance Advocates are organizing a “Dancing Protest” at liquor commission office today on Maui and tomorrow (Thursday) on O‘ahu.

People can also email testimony to liquor@honolulu.gov.
