Helping Hand - June 27 2014 full interview with Accessible Hawaii

Helping Hand is a weekly feature on HPR1 stations statewide airing Fridays at 5:30pm and also featured here online. Each Friday afternoon, All Things Considered local host Dave Lawrence speaks with an organization in the community that offers assistance to the disabled and other folks in need. This week we’re continuing a three-week series of guests from islands around the state. This week we connect with Hawai`i Island and Accessible Hawai`i, via Executive Director Jean Hartley.

According to their website, Accessible Hawai`i links Big Island residents and visitors with an online resource of accessible activities, events and services that have accommodations geared toward the disabled, addressing ADA requirements or in some way offering adaptive programs catered to their needs. From beaches to transportation, restaurants to water-sports, as well as inland activities, the website seeks to provide a roadmap helpful to both those with disabilities, and the loved ones and caregivers who are part of their lives. A polio survivor who has traveled the world visiting 32 countries, through Accessible Hawai`i Jean shares the message that “disability is a mere inconvenience.” Learn more this week as she is our very special guest.
