Helping Hand February 20, 2015 complete interview with Family Promise

Helping Hand is a weekly feature on HPR1 stations each Friday afternoon at 5:30 and appearing here. Each week, Helping Hand puts the spotlight on an organization or event in the community that offers assistance to the disabled and other folks in need with HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence. This week we’re learning about Family Promise of Hawai‘i. According to their website, Family Promise of Hawai’i is a program to help families with children escape homelessness. Founded in Hawai’i in 2005, they are our guests today with Mary Saunders, Executive Director, and Program Manager Christy MacPherson.

Family Promise of Hawai'i was founded in 2005 and began with their first Family Center in Kailua in 2007. That was followed by their second Family Center in Honolulu. They work with interfaith congregations to host families and help their guests with employment, education and job training resources. Their Family Center has phone access, mail, fax, copiers, showers and laundry facilities. They also provide transportation to their guests to and from the host sites and Family Center. Their guests work during the day, pursue employment, attend school or job training.
