Helping Hand is a weekly feature on HPR1 stations Fridays at 5:30pm on All Things Considered and here online. Each Friday afternoon, ATC Local Host Dave Lawrence speaks with an organization offering assistance to the most vulnerable in the community, giving visibility to those helping the disabled and other folks in need. This week we have a returning visit themed around the holidays and the importance of holiday giving. We're learning about HUGS – Help, Understanding & Group Support -- volunteers trying to address issues families with seriously ill children face, with our guest Joan Naguwa, Executive Director of HUGS.
We've heard from HUGS before. This time we hear how folks can help them via the Sony Open and Friends of Hawai’i Charities, and how this effort helps them assist families in crisis. It is also, as we'll hear, a way to help a lot of other local nonprofits raise much-needed money. We’ll also learn more about end of year giving and the critical impact it has on resources for those in need throughout the year. Today we also hear about how community giving has had positive impacts on local families facing extraordinary circumstances by assisting various HUGS programs.
