HPR News Special: Genetically Engineered: Beyond Emotion

HPR’s news team takes a week-long look at some of the issues involved in the debate about genetically engineered crops in Hawaii. We’ll tell you why the use of pesticides is an important part of understanding the broader story, and we’ll hear from residents of one community about how they feel about their experience of years of living with a GMO seed facility in their midst. And we’ll show you why labeling food as “non GMO” is an idea that’s gathering popularity on various sides of the debate. Listen for the stories on Morning Edition and All Things Considered the week of March 17th.

Nick Yee’s passion for music developed at an early age, as he collected jazz and rock records pulled from dusty locations while growing up in both Southern California and Honolulu. In college he started DJing around Honolulu, playing Jazz and Bossa Nova sets at various lounges and clubs under the name dj mr.nick. He started to incorporate Downtempo, House and Breaks into his sets as his popularity grew, eventually getting DJ residences at different Chinatown locations. To this day, he is a fixture in the Honolulu underground club scene, where his live sets are famous for being able to link musical and cultural boundaries, starting mellow and building the audience into a frenzy while steering free of mainstream clichés.
