HPR’s Bill Dorman Elected to National Board of Public Radio News Directors

HPR News Director Bill Dorman

Bill Dorman, news director for Hawai?i Public Radio since 2007, was elected to the Board of Public Radio News Directors Incorporated (PRNDI) at its recent national conference in Saint Louis, Missouri. Dorman will serve as the Medium Market Representative for two years; among his duties will be planning, with other members of the PRNDI board, their annual conference.

In a statement to PRNDI voting members, Dorman wrote “This is a critical time of transition -- for our industry, for our organization, and for many of our stations. Expectations have continued to grow, and the ways of dealing with them are shifting. I would like to represent the particular challenges faced by medium-sized stations. What doesn't change are the maintenance of high standards, the pursuit of journalistic excellence, and the aspiration to keep learning from each other and to keep doing things just a bit better.”

PRNDI is an association representing those responsible for the day-to-day direction, reporting, and editing of local public media newsrooms. Its mission is to enhance news and information services and programming thoughout public media. The association serves news directors, as well as reporters, producers, students, educators, and others in public media journalism.

At the recent annual conference, Hawai?i Public Radio also awarded a second-place PRNDI Award for “Best Use of Sound” for “Buried But Not Forgotten: P?hoa Families Return to Cemetery” by HPR General Assignment Reporter Molly Solomon.
