Tomorrow is Kamehameha Day in Hawai’i, a state holiday commemorating the warrior king who used both force and diplomacy to unify the Hawaiian islands. HPR’sNoeTanigawa reports on his life and legacy as recorded in a new book about his life. “The Rise of a King: Kamehameha” will be required reading for fourth and seventh graders at Kamehameha Schools.
“The Rise of a King: Kamehameha”, an award winning book for young adults by David Kawika Eyre, is available at Na Mea/ Native Books. Costco, and other booksellers or from Kamehameha Publishing. The Bishop Museum will be open tomorrow, Kamehameha Day, with several works associated with the King on view. » King Kamehameha Statue Lei Draping Ceremony: At 3 p.m. Wednesday the statue of Kamehameha I, across the street from Iolani Palace, will be draped with lei.
» 98th annual King Kamehameha Floral Parade: The parade starts at 9 a.m. Saturday at King and Richards streets and ends at Kapiolani Park with 10 floats and more than 6,000 marchers expected.
» Hoolaulea: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, featuring food booths, entertainment, arts and craft vendors and informational booths, at Kakaako Makai Gateway Park (grassy area between the UH medical building and the Children's Discovery Center)
