The Long View: Neal Milner

It’s campaign season. In recent shows we've talked about how people form their political ideas ...and how tough it is to get people to listen to, much less adopt opposing views.   People prefer other people who confirm what they believe and there are studies that show this seems to be built into how we make decisions. But as we've discussed, this is a propensity and a recent experiment at the University of Arizona suggests we can overcome it. Neal Milner had a look and this morning he put the study into the context of the long view.

While you're thinking about the history of the State Art Museum, consider this: What happens when you fuse color and creativity on metal? If you're into metal sculpture, you may have an idea from the finished product...but what about watching it take shape? Those lucky enough to live in Maui will get their chance when Richard DiGiacomo gets his hands dirty - live in Makawao. It's a unique opportunity to watch the magic happen and see into the mind of an artist.

Often in conversation, you may hear people refer to the Hawaiian sovereignty movement. Law professor Williamson Changwould disagree with that one size fits all title. He says there are several views of sovereignty that rarely make it into mainstream discussions. This week, he'll be part of a public panel to consider alternative visions.

For 40 years, the Honolulu Wind Ensemble, formerly known as the Honolulu Community Concert Band, has graced the stage with their unique blend of wind instruments. The band plays  classical, contemporary, and premier pieces right here in the islands...and sometimes beyond. Doctors, lawyers, nurses, businessmen and women, - and yes, musicians make up the group, though often that diversity can easily be overlooked as the band plays. David Tholen, board member of the group, joined us to share more of the group's history.

Intro Music: City Profiles, No 1 - A Festival Dance by Norman Dello Joio, Keystone Wind Ensemble

Outro Music: Fantasisie Brillante w/ Manuel Lichtenwoherer on Trumpet by Jean Baptiste Arban
