November 3 - 9, 2014 Stargazer: A Local Discovery Relating To Quasars

We’ve got three planets to look for at sunset, we get a chance to try and spot the Hubble Space Telescope, and we learn about a local discovery involving quasars as HPR’s Dave Lawrence speaks with Christopher Phillips from the Mauna Kea Astronomy Outreach Committee for this week’s Stargazer report.

This image is a color shot of the area around SDSS J1029 2623; the photo was taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. According to the researchers, the Quasar images (marked with A, B, and C) are "gravitationally lensed" by a foreground cluster of galaxies. Three galaxies of the lensing cluster (marked as G1a, b and G2) are also marked.

Learn more about the discovery at the Subaru Telescope website.

Dave Lawrence is the local host of All Things Considered, Road Stories (formerly Off the Road) and Stargazer.
