Hawaiian music is as much a part of the islands as the mountains and ocean it often describes. But making a living playing it can be a challenge. HPR’s Molly Solomon spoke with some local musicians and has this report.
Lihau Hannahs Paik and Kellen Paik started performing on stage together in 2005 and were married five years later. They discussed their latest release, "Bumbye," with Derrick Malama during Kanikapila Sunday on April 28, 2013.
Vocalist Raiatea Helm has released a new “mini” CD for the holidays called “Ave Maria.” It features three songs, and proceeds from the sale benefit her Hawaiian Music Foundation for youth education and the Catholic Church’s Office for Social Ministry, which administers to Hawaii’s poor. Raiatea says she dedicated her rendition of “Ave Maria” to her late grandmother.
