Taimane's Hawaii Theatre Debut

‘Ukulele virtuoso Taimanewill make her Hawai‘i Theater debut this coming weekend.

After parting ways with Mountain Apple recording she’s set out to push her music into larger stage productions.

Her new show ‘The Elements” is a musical and visual tribute to the four traditional elements—earth, air, fire and water.  She calls it a mixture of Cirque du Solei with Hawaiian music.  Her quick style of ‘ukulele playing is paired with Spanish flamenco, Japanese Taiko, and Latin percussion.  The music is backed up with spoken-word poetry, dancers, martial artists and aerialists. She spoke with HPR’s Nick Yee and said she enjoys bringing a Hawaiian instrument into a contemporary setting

Taimane’s presentation of ‘The Elements” takes place this Friday at the Hawai‘i Theater.

Nick Yee’s passion for music developed at an early age, as he collected jazz and rock records pulled from dusty locations while growing up in both Southern California and Honolulu. In college he started DJing around Honolulu, playing Jazz and Bossa Nova sets at various lounges and clubs under the name dj mr.nick. He started to incorporate Downtempo, House and Breaks into his sets as his popularity grew, eventually getting DJ residences at different Chinatown locations. To this day, he is a fixture in the Honolulu underground club scene, where his live sets are famous for being able to link musical and cultural boundaries, starting mellow and building the audience into a frenzy while steering free of mainstream clichés.
