Rich Richardson, Executive Director of the Arts at Marks' Garage

The Arts at Marks’ Garage, that Chinatown community hub, is nearly fifteen years old.  The scrappy, hospitable, office/gallery/performance venue has hosted hundreds of exhibitions and performances for thousands of audience members.  HPR’sNoeTanigawa reports The Arts at Marks' needs community help now.

Rather than raise rentals and ticket prices, Richardson hopes to expand on current fundraising activities like the Rocky Horror Picture Show and End of the Year Bash.  Coming up October 31st, all proceeds from the Hallowballoo "Marathon" (only 1 mile) will go to Marks' Garage.

Partnerships are another area with growth potential.  Marks' is currently working with the Hawai'i Theatre to design and make backdrops for performances in the upcoming season.  Students and professional artists will collaborate for this innovative project.  Corporate partnerships with Kona Brewing Company and  Bloomingdale's are examples of successful brand identification.

Donations to Arts at Marks' Garage are accepted online where you can click to become a sustaining supporter by joining the 1001 Friends of Arts at Marks' Garage.  A party is planned for tonight, First Friday, where you can donate in person at the corner of Nu'uanu and Pauahi Avenues.

Creatives looking for workspace find friends at Marks' Garage.  Currently a private office and two cubicles are available.  Versatile rental spaces are also available for parties, screenings, meetings, classes, workouts, etc.  In the next year, nine more live/work artist lofts will be available in the Mendonca Building, which is managed by Marks Garage.  Rent for the live/work lofts will range from $800 to $1500.
