H?k?le‘a crew recently visited the community of Thursday Island. Dozens of residents greeted the traditional voyaging canoe as H?k?le‘a sailed into the island's dock.

Voyaging canoe H?k?le‘a is sailing through the Gulf of Carpentaria on the northern coast of Australia. They’re heading towards the city of Darwin and are stopping at island communities along the way. HPR’s Molly Solomon caught up with H?k?le‘a crew member Hye Jung Kim, as part of our ongoing series, H?k?le‘a: Voyage of Aloha.

A new crew will take over, once H?k?le‘a reaches Darwin. Next up on the sail plan is Bali, Indonesia.

Thursday Island residents greeted the H?k?le‘a's arrival with traditional song and dance, as well as a large community dinner.

Meanwhile, H?k?le‘a's sister canoe Hikianalia has returned to Hawaii and is currently heading towards theNorthwestern Hawaiian Islands.
