As we sail into the New Year, crew members from the voyaging canoes H?k?le‘a and Hikianalia consider lessons they’ve learned over the past year at sea. HPR’s Molly Solomon spoke with one of them as part of our ongoing series, H?k?le‘a: Voyage of Aloha.

The Polynesian Voyaging Society announced an updated sail plan in late December. The sister canoe Hikianalia will be returning to Hawaii later this year. The solar-powered voyaging canoe will be replaced with a boat that's able to tow over longer distances in case of an emergency. This could prove necessary as the H?k?le‘a prepares to leave the Pacific Ocean for the first time.
