Honolulu based singer, songwriter and storyteller James McCarthy shares songs and stories with a live audience in HPR's Atherton Studio.

Hot on the heels of her CD release tour Taimane Joins us in the studio for a live concert for her friends, her fans, and members of HPR. She shared with us songs from her latest CD Elemental alongside renditions and originals from past albums.

On the next Applause in a Small Room we'll be featuring one of Hawaii's best bluegrass and americana bands, the Saloon pilots.  They joined us n the studio and shared songs ranging from U2 and the Grateful dead to bluegrass favorites.. and all of it done in their usualy saloon pilots style.  This sunday at 4pm on HPR-1

On this show we feature the piano mastery of Tommy James from our series of Piano Jazz Masters Concerts.   Tommy will be sharing music from the cinema from composers such as Bronislau Kaper, Henry Mancini, Vince Guaraldi, and many more. 

We're in the middle of fundraising and today's show is all about sharing what we do on the show. We'll take a listen to a new recording with Blaine Asing and Alx Kawakami, two Hawaii based artists playing a show at the Blue Note Hawaii on April 12 and 13th 2018. In the second segment of the show we'll hear a couple of songs that have become favorites of mine.  The first from Ron Artis II and the second is from Introspektra. and we end the show with live performances from Take 6, Delfeayo Marsalis, and Eric Hutchinson. All recorded in Hawaii Public Radio's Atherton Studio.

Welcome to HPR’s Atherton Performing Arts Studio

The Atherton Studio seats 60 to 75 people and is home to a magnificent Bösendorfer concert grand piano. The intimate performances are like sitting in on a private studio recording session. All concerts are on Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm unless otherwise noted. Advance ticket purchase is strongly encouraged, as the house is frequently sold out before the performance date.

Eric Hutchinson joined us in the Atherton studio to share his song "Dear Me." Eric is playing at the Blue Note in Waikiki August 31 thru September 2 2017.

 

Mango Season

Mango Season is a Honolulu-based seven-piece band that serves up an intoxicating mix of vintage soul, jazz-infused harmonies, and booty-shaking funk. Their Atherton concert will also celebrate the release of their new CD.

On todays show we're featuring a concert with Streetlight Cadence from August 8th, 2015.  The band features cellist Brian Webb, Violinist Jonathan Franklin, Guitarist Chaz Umamoto, and Accordionist and percussionist Jesse Shiroma.
