This week on Helping Hand we’re learning about Habitat for Humanity Maui, including their innovative ReStore and upcoming benefit golf event November 14 on the Valley Isle with our guest Polly MacRoberts, ReStore Manager, at Habitat for Humanity Maui.

    

This week on Helping Hand we’re learning about November being Epilepsy Awareness Month and the Epilepsy Foundation Hawai‘i 3rd annual Living Well with Epilepsy Conference on Saturday, November 14, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Queen’s Conference Center. We hear more about this invaluable free conference with our guest the President of the Board of Directors of the Epilepsy Foundation of Hawai‘i, Lacey Shimabukuro.

This week Helping Hand is following up with a guest we had previously, as we learn about a special event coming up to support Hawai‘i Fido Service Dogs. Hawai’i Fi-Do Service Dogs is a non-profit corporation that trains dogs to assist the disabled. We’ll learn more about their fundraising event Friday, October 23rd at the Honolulu Country Club, Dining with Dogs. We welcome back Jim Kennedy, Executive Director at Hawai‘i Fido Service Dogs.

This week we’re learning about Best Buddies Hawai'i. Their website states that their mission is to create opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

This week Helping Hand has a return appearance from an invaluable organization for the disabled, Aloha Independent Living Hawai’i. Their website states that they were founded to give persons with disabilities in Hawai’i the choice of where to receive independent living services, and they provide many related services. We welcome back Roxanne Bolden, Executive Director, and Brian Hauser, Director of Programs, of Aloha Independent Living Hawai'i.

This week we’re pleased to have a returning guest on Helping Hand: the Assistive Technology Resource Centers of Hawai'i. ATRC is a non-profit whose mission is to link people with technology; their programs are geared to educate individuals with disabilities and their friends and family members, professionals, and anyone else interested in disabilities. ATRC is the State of Hawai'i's designated Assistive Technology Act agency, and we welcome back Barbara Fischlowitz-Leong, ATRC Executive Director.

This week the SPIN Network returns to Helping Hand! The Special Parent Information Network is a parent-to-parent organization that provides resources, support and referrals to parents of children and young adults with disabilities and the professionals who serve them. We welcome back the Coordinator at the SPIN Network, Susan Rocco and a new guest, Program Specialist Amanda Ka'ahanui.

This week on Helping Hand we have a returning guest: the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Hawai’i Chapter. We’ll learn about their mission to work toward curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases, and about the services they offer in the areas of health care, advocacy and education. We’ll also hear about some important fundraisers coming up as we welcome our guest, Executive Director of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Hawai’i Chapter, Adrianna O’Donnell.

This week on Helping Hand, returning guests offer information on helping folks with mental illnesses, and the unique clubhouse day and evening programs. We’re privileged to be joined by the Psychosocial Rehabilitation/Case Management Service Coordinator at the Hawai'i Adult Mental Health Division of the Department of Health, Kathleen Miriam, and Peer Specialist Intern Martin Boegel.

This week Helping Hand welcomes back the Alzheimer’s Association Aloha Chapter – and a new guest from that organization -- Steve Tam, Alzheimer’s Association Aloha Chapter Volunteer Advisory Board member.

This week on Helping Hand we have both a returning guest organization, and a new guest, all at the same time!

This week we’re welcoming back returning guests the National Federation of the Blind of Hawai‘i. The National Federation of the Blind of Hawai'i is made up of members of our community who are blind, helping other blind people and the general public with networking, advocacy and other invaluable resources on issues relating to their integration into the community.

Helping Hand celebrates the invaluable folks at Hawai'i Meals On Wheels this week, helping bring nutrition and socialization to elderly, disabled and other folks who have a hard time getting around.  Executive Director of Hawai‘i Meals on Wheels, Claire Shimabukuro and Nutrition Volunteer Dash Holland join HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence.

This week on Helping Hand we’re learning about a special event Saturday relating to ALS and ALS Research. At the event, Dr. Justin Ichida, an Assistant Professor of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine at USC, and an ‘Iolani School grad, will be the keynote speaker, discussing his research and efforts in partnership with The ALS Association Golden West Chapter to bring a research project to Hawai'i.

Helping Hand is tackling the housing crisis and how to help folks on the edge of homelessness with our guest today, EAH Housing. All Things Considered Honolulu Host Dave Lawrence speaks with EAH Housing Vice President Hawai‘i Kevin Carney. According to their website, they’re a nonprofit corporation founded with the belief that affordable rental housing is the cornerstone to sustainable, living communities.

Helping Hand returns to the issue of homelessness in the Aloha State with Care-A-Van Drop-In Clinic from Waikiki Health. Helping Hand is a weekly feature on HPR1 stations statewide and then online at hawaiipublicradio.org in our growing database of resources.
