Atherton Season – Winter 2017-2018

Welcome to HPR’s Atherton Performing Arts Studio

The Atherton Studio seats 60 to 75 people and is home to a magnificent Bösendorfer concert grand piano. The intimate performances are like sitting in on a private studio recording session, and the shows themselves are taped for re-broadcast on our live music show Applause in a Small Room hosted by our sound engineer Jason Taglianetti. 

All concerts are on Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm unless otherwise noted.

Advance ticket purchase is strongly encouraged, as the house is frequently sold out before the performance date.

Tickets $20 for HPR members, $25 for non-members, $15 for students with current ID.

Schedule subject to change.

Metered on-street parking, or paid lots at First Hawaiian Bank (Kapi?olani branch) or the Pan Am Building. Please do not park in the Don Quijote parking lot.

Hawaii Jazz Piano Masters Series
A special concert series featuring four of Hawaii's great jazz piano players in solo performance on the Atherton Studio's Bosendorfer grand piano.  Each concert offers an intimate and unique look at the amazing talents we have here in our own backyard.  Each show starts at 7:30 and features two sets with an intermission.

October 21 - Hawai?i Piano Jazz Masters featuring Rich Crandall – piano jazz
The Hawaii Piano Jazz Masters Series begins with Rich Crandall in a solo concert at the Atherton Studio on the Bosendorfer grand piano. He has performed with greats like Freddie Hubbard, Sadao Watanabe, Frank Morgan, Ernestine Anderson, Trummy Young, Henry Mancini, Ira Sullivan, Rufus Reid, et al. But it’s life in the islands that’s assured Rich’s musical individuality. Rich’s new solo piano album of standards, Buddy Nowhere 1930s, is now released and available online or by mail order.  SOLD OUT! 

October 27 - Live Halloween Party withdj mr. nicklive dj set

dj mr.nick host of Bridging the Gap will do a live DJ set during a Facebook Live broadcast inside HPR’s Atherton Studio.  The event will be filmed in a “Boiler Room” style, with all guests and DJ facing the broadcast camera. Participants are encouraged to attend in costume, and dance, Dance, DANCE!  This event is by donation, and is a fundraiser for Hawaii Public Radio. 

October 28 – Jonathan Karrant – vocal jazz
Las Vegas based Jazz vocalist Jonathan Karrant makes his Atherton debut with a warm, romantic voice that carries the Jazz charisma of Mel Torme.  He’ll sing a collection of classics from the American songbook as well as a few contemporary pop songs blended into Jazz.

November 4 – Sandy Tsukiyama: Just Jobim: The familiar (and less familiar) works of Antônio Carlos Jobim. – Brazilian
Sandy Tsukiyama host of HPR’s Brazilian Experience presents and evening filled with the music of Brazilian Singer-Songwriter Antônio Carlos Jobim. … Selecting both well-known songs as well as a few unknown gems. SOLD OUT!

November 11 – U.S. Air Force Band (Small Kine)-  acoustic rock/pop band

The (Small Kine) US Air Force Band presents a special Veterans Day eclectic mix of rock, pop, country and local favorites in HPR’s Atherton Studio.  The Small Kine ensemble is made up of five members and features guitar, ukulele, bass, percussion and vocals. They'll be performing all-acoustic arrangements of such pieces as "Chicken Fried" by Zac Brown Band, "There’s Nothing Holding Me Back" (Shawn Mendes), "3AM" (Matchbox Twenty), and "Bad Blood" (Taylor Swift). 

November 17 – U.S. Pacific Fleet Band  - classical/chamber

Pacific Fleet Band Chamber Music Showcase presents a diverse selection of music including Gabrieli's "Canzona No. 2" performed by their Double Brass Quintet, "Tubamobile" by their Tuba-Euphonia Quartet, "Over the Rainbow" by their Saxophone Quintet, and "Voodoo Groove" by their Stowaway Brass Band (New Orleans Style Brass Band). The evening's narration will relate the music to Veterans' Day, the Centennial of World War I, and National Pearl Harbor Day. 

November 18 – Kit Ebersbach and Starr Kalahiki - jazz
Vocalist Starr Kalahiki, Pianist Kit Ebersbach and bassist Mark Tanouye present an evening of lounge standards, show tunes, and Hawaiian classics… presented in a very non-traditional way. 

December 2  Momi Riley - jazz and Hawaiian via harp
Momi Riley is a Big Isle harpist/singer with beautiful, poetic, original songs that pull from Jazz, Hawaiian, Rock and Folk music.  In the early 80’s she recorded a pair of albums with a full band, and is being rediscovered with the help of the Aloha Got Soul record label. 

December 9 – Hawai?i Piano Jazz Masters featuring Tommy James – piano jazz
Legendary pianist and musical director of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Tommy James, will perform a solo concert featuring jazz from the cinema.  Mancini, Mandel,  Bronislau Kaper, Leith Stevens, Miles' Louis Malle are all fair game with this jazz master.  SOLD OUT!

December 16 – David Becker – solo guitar, blues
For more than three decades, Grammy nominated guitarist, composer and producer David Becker has continued to define himself as one of the best and most unique voices in jazz and contemporary music by combining diverse influences and a passion for the new and different, and his ability to play for the present while always keeping an eye on the past and future. He has led the world renown, critically acclaimed DAVID BECKER TRIBUNE to a worldwide audience by performing in more than 25 countries. 

January 6 – James McCarthy – acoustic folk, rock, Celtic
James B. McCarthy brings his rare blend of original songs , traditional songs and finely crafted tales to the Atherton on January 6. Offering songs from the sublime to the ridiculous. Woven together with sensitivity, and humor, James will play songs that span his work on stage and screen as well as upbeat numbers written for Doolin Rakes, of which he was the founding member. Audience members will be invited and encouraged to join voices with James in the latter part of the show, making this a wonderful way to celebrate Twelfth Night, the traditional culmination of the holiday season. Appropriate for ages 12 and above.

January 13 – Lito Arkangel – traditional and contemporary Hawaiian
Lito Arkangel mixes traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music with the stories behind the songs… digging into the meaning within the meaning of a composition.  SOLD OUT

January 20 – Sounds of Aloha – barbershop quartet
Sounds of Aloha presents songs from the great American songbook presented in a barbershop style.  SOLD OUT

January 27 – The Freddie Miranda Jr. Quintet – Latin jazz
Straight ahead… Latin Jazz (with a bit of Salsa).  SOLD OUT

February 3 – Hawai?i Piano Jazz Masters featuring Joshua Kaye – piano jazz
Joshua Kaye began playing jazz professionally in his hometown of Columbia, Maryland.  He attended St. Mary's College of Maryland on a scholarship.  He's played at the Randolph Hotel and at Freud's cafe in Oxford.  In San Francisco, Joshua continued his musical studies under jazz pianist Dick Hindman and performed just about daily at the various clubs, hotels, and restaurants in the Bay Area.  For several years he played every Saturday at the Sand Dollar in Stinson Beach performing duo jazz with bassist Stu Hamm.  He also released his first CD, The Joshua Kaye Quartet - Live in 2004 which featured bassist Robb Fisher, drummer Pete Riso, and percussionist Danilo Paiz who were veterans of the Cal Tjader band. 

February 10 – Two Worlds One: Celtic Harps, Rare Instruments and Wondrous Stories: Lisa Lynne & Aryeh Frankfurter – harps and rare instruments
The multi-instrumentalist duo of Lisa Lynne and Aryeh Frankfurter play Celtic Harps, Swedish Nyckelharpa, Ukrainian Bandura, Citterns, Irish Bouzouki, viola, and more. Lisa and Aryeh’s performances have been enchanting audiences throughout the country with unique music, both traditional and original, entwined with humorous stories of their lives as professional musicians whose career spans several decades. The result has been described as breathtaking and always results in standing ovations and invitations to return. SOLD OUT!

February 17 – Andy Kimbel – acoustic folk and blues
Guitarist Andy Kimbel delivers spirited, dynamically-packed performances while showcasing both self- penned original songs and strong interpretations of early classic country-blues and early 70's based folk while captivating audiences with his highly reviewed acoustic guitar work.  When he plays, you will hear some very impressive guitar work with the influences of traditional blues, folk, R&B some very fancy finger style and a touch of New Orleans style roots music.

February 24th  Kenny Endo & Rhythm Summit- World Fusion
Three of Hawaii’s best musicians collide in a fury of world music called Rhythm Summit.  Taiko master Kenny Endo, drummer Noel Okimoto and bassist Dean Taba create a unique “East meets West” style of music that weaves in and out of jazz fusion, world music, and percussion madness.  SOLD OUT

March 3rd  Kamakak?hau Fernandez (Cancelled) - Hawaiian Falsetto
We're sorry, but the show has been canceled by the artist due to a family emergency.   

March 4th- Eat the Sun - improvisational koto/jazz 
A trio of free improvising musicians between koto player Gretchen Jude, bassist Jason Hoopes, and guitarist Noah Philips. The group challenges the traditional Japanese instrumentalist to play with Western string instrumentation. Rooted in her years of musical training in Japan, musician Gretchen Jude finds unique ways to interweave both traditional and contemporary forms into her improvisations. With years of experience studying and playing across the genres of classical, jazz and rock music, contrabassist Jason Hoopes and guitarist Noah Philips explore the wide auditory potential of their instruments. With deep listening skills, the trio traverses a delicately balanced landscape of noise and tonality which, because it is improvised, always responds to the conditions of the time and place of its performance.

March 10 - Hawai?i Piano Jazz Masters featuring Ethan Capone – piano jazz
The son of a piano teacher and a piano technician, Ethan Capone began his music education early.  He developed his technique further at Ithaca College in upstate New York with the head of jazz studies, Steve Brown. Ethan moved to Hawaii in 2007 and has immersed himself in the music scene here. Well-known in jazz circles, Ethan has worked in many jazz ensembles, one of which performed alongside Chris Botti and his quartet. Other jazz musicians he has worked with include, Valery Ponomarev, Bob Albanese, Rob Sheps and Michael Paolo. He has collaborated on several projects with local artist, Henry Kapono, including a performance at the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards with Mick Fleetwood. And he has accompanied Grammy Award Nominated Gospel singer/songwriter, Vashawn Mitchell.  SOLD OUT
