The next National Climate Assessment is due in 2018 and the federal and nonfederal authors are now at work. Victoria Keener is a research fellow at the East West Center and the lead author for the Hawaii and Pacific Islands Chapter of the current 4th National Climate Assessment.

Katsu Goto was an early advocate for plantation workers' rights, but was killed by lynching in 19th Century Honoka'a.

There is an ugly current that runs through American life: rough justice. In communities all over the country, people who spoke against the interests of those in power could be lynched. Katsu Goto was a “first boat” immigrant from Japan who spoke up for the rights of plantation laborers and, on the morning of October 29, 1889, his body was found hanging from a telephone pole near Honoka’a on Hawaii Island
