HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment efforts have made great strides in recent years, leading to an unexpected drop in public concern

This week, a new report from the World Health Organization is providing another reason to focus on HIV/AIDS.  For the first time, the cumulative number of HIV cases in Europe increased to over 2 million. That’s includes a 7% rise in new cases since last year and the highest annual number since reporting began in the 1980s. According to the Hawai‘i Department of Health’s latest report, there are just under 4,700 HIV cases here in Hawaii. But the same DOH report says that diagnosed cases of HIV in most recent years 2012-14 are incomplete due to delays in reporting. So we called Dr. Cecilia M. Shikuma, the Director of the Hawai?i Center for AIDS.

The young performers we hear each weekend on Christopher O’Riley’s NPR program “From the Top” know that their host, a seasoned and highly acclaimed pianist who gives concerts around the world, shares their love of music and knows what it takes to become a concert artist. He makes them comfortable, and always seems to bring out their best. He’s in Hawaii to bring out the best in young local musicians in concerts to be broadcast later on “From the Top” and to give a concert of his own.   We talked about the hard work that goes into preparing a piece of music for the concert stage.

Creator of the HOPE program, Judge Steven Alm, recently retired from his judgeship in Hawaii to help implement HOPE elsewhere

A new study shows that an approach to criminal justice might not reduce recidivism or reduce expenditures. The acclaimed HOPE (Hawaii’s Opportunity Parole with Enforcement) was developed by a local judge and has come under fire.

Overtime rules are a central issue the Fair Labor Standards Act that was set to take effect today

Today we were supposed to have the federal fair labor standards act go into effect. It would have changed how and which employees would be compensated for overtime.  21 states had filed a lawsuit over the rule...and last week, a US Federal Court judge in Texas issued an injunction to the application of the rules and said it applied to all states. with many businesses having already made preparation, they’re in limbo. The injunction for now, has effectively made a federal law more a choice than a means of compliance. We called HR specialist Debbie Padello from SimplicityHR By Altres to see what advice she has for businesses on what was supposed to be date marking a labor milestone.

Kalo is the Hawaiian name given to cultivated taro.

Kalo, also known as taro, has sustained the Hawaiian people for as long as anyone can remember and, in the manner of staple foods around the world, is at the heart of their history, culture, and spirituality. Kauai’s Hanalei Valley, home of the Waipa Foundation, is one of the richest kalo-growing areas in the state, and it’s the setting of the Foundation’s 7th Annual Kalo Fest this Sunday. Kalen Kelekoma is putting the event together, and he’s on the line from Kauai.
