This morning the Board of Education will consider a request from Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi. Her reasoning to give 20 leadership members a 4 point 5 percent pay raise is to be consistent with the adjustment given to educational officers as of July 1; and to recruit and retain quality senior leaders... the deputy superintendent, six assistant superintendents and 15 complex-area superintendents. The total amount involved would amount to a little more than 143 thousand dollars. So how are teachers reacting to the ask?

The first Greeks came to Hawaii in the 1830’s, aboard whaling ships.   That was the origin of one of Hawaii’s most closely knit immigrant communities… one whose members have stayed in close touch with one another ever since. For 35 years now, Hawaii’s Greek families have put on a festival that has become an end-of-summer tradition; Regina Mass is one of its volunteer coordinators.

There’s no place quite like Hana, and it’s likely that its isolation, combined with the spirit of the community, will keep its unique qualities alive for a long time to come.  Like all places that lie at the end of a long and winding road, it has developed its own character without undue influence from the outside world, and the things that make Hana special are being celebrated this weekend at the Hana Cultural Center & Museum’s 18th Annual Ho’olaule’a.   HarolenKaiwi is one of its organizers
