When you think of the business boom in China, philanthropy may be one of the last things that comes to mind.  But the China Global Philanthropy Institute is working to change that with the help of UH’s East-West Center.

For the next two days, the group is hosting a “Sustainability Summit” to create a dialogue between leaders in sustainable philanthropy.  The goal is to find better ways to address issues like marine biodiversity, green finance, and renewable energy.

Organizers say while the idea of environmental philanthropy is new to China… there are individuals who want to use their wealth for good.  Carol Fox is the Director of Special Projects at the East-West Center at UH Manoa. She says private investors and foundations have the capitol to influence solutions… when governments can’t take financial risks.

Carol Fox will continue to explain global philanthropy in China on The Conversation this morning at 8 on HPR-2.

Nick Yee’s passion for music developed at an early age, as he collected jazz and rock records pulled from dusty locations while growing up in both Southern California and Honolulu. In college he started DJing around Honolulu, playing Jazz and Bossa Nova sets at various lounges and clubs under the name dj mr.nick. He started to incorporate Downtempo, House and Breaks into his sets as his popularity grew, eventually getting DJ residences at different Chinatown locations. To this day, he is a fixture in the Honolulu underground club scene, where his live sets are famous for being able to link musical and cultural boundaries, starting mellow and building the audience into a frenzy while steering free of mainstream clichés.
