The title of Harue McVay's retrospective exhibition at Windward Community College Gallery ‘Iolani is "A Life Flowing", a most apt expression of her process. In our interview, she dismissed questions about motivation and influence saying, "I just did it, I just let it come out." She did, and encouraged others to let it flow as well. The 1950’s into the 70’s were heady times in the UH M?noa Art Department. Early Department Chair, Ben Norris, championed contemporary art and brought in global talents like Jean Charlot, and Max Ernst, all of which had ripple effects across Honolulu. HPR’sNoeTanigawa reports on a show by HarueMcVay, whose ceramics exemplify the exuberance of the time.
