UPDATE: As of 2 p.m. Wednesday, Hawaiian Telcom says they have resolved the issue that caused intermittent phone service issues across the state. The problem stemmed from a glitch in the call routing equipment, which allowed only some voice calls to complete.
Hawaiian Telcom is experiencing technical problems that have caused intermittent phone outages across the islands. Hawaiian Telcom spokesperson Ann Nishida Fry says the problem started this morning at 6 a.m.
The phone outages have also affected 911 lines on Maui, Hawai‘i Island, and Kaua‘i.
Honolulu Police Department spokeswoman Michelle Yu is asking the public to limit 911 calls to emergencies only until the problem has been fixed.
If voice calls do not go through, you can use your cell phone to send a text message to 911. The text message should include the type of emergency service needed (police, fire, or ambulance), the location of the emergency, and a brief description.
Hawaiian Telcom says it was not yet clear how many customers are affected. Hawaii Public Radio will continue to provide updates on the issue as information becomes available.
