Hawai’i Public Radio is cancelling its scheduled Honolulu Mayoral Candidate Forum on Monday, July 11.
Charles Djou withdrew from the event, several days after his campaign agreed to take part. Sam Aiona of the Djou campaign blames a scheduling conflict, although he had confirmed Djou’s participation on Friday. Djou told HPR’s Wayne Yoshioka the cancellation was because of a “miscommunication.”
Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell criticized Djou for “backing out at the last minute”…adding that it shows Djou is, “someone who is clearly not ready to make a sincere effort and talk about real issues.”
A spokesperson for Djou’s campaign called Caldwell’s comments a “misrepresentation”…saying Djou will take part in a number of debates, forums and interviews—including one on HPR’s talk show “The Conversation” on August 2nd.
