HPR Earns 5th Consecutive Top Rating from Leading Charity Evaluator

For the fifth consecutive year, Hawai‘i Public Radio, a statewide radio network, has been awarded the top 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s leading independent charity evaluator. The report, which can be found at bit.ly/hpr4stars, demonstrates that the member-supported station executes its mission of providing non-commercial informational and cultural programming in a financially efficient way and is committed to accountability and transparency.

In his congratulatory letter to the station, Charity Navigator President and CEO Michael Thatcher wrote, “Attaining a 4-star rating verifies that Hawaii Public Radio exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in your area of work. Only 6% of the charities we evaluate have received at least 5 consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that Hawaii Public Radio outperforms most other charities in America. This exceptional designation from Charity Navigator sets Hawaii Public radio apart from its peers and demonstrates to the public its trustworthiness."

“This recognition of our fiscal responsibility couldn’t be more timely,” said José A. Fajardo, HPR President and General Manager. “On October 12, we will be launching our fall on-air fund drive and we look forward to sharing with our donors this unbiased confirmation that we take very seriously the good stewardship of their contributions. HPR listeners will learn that 73 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to the programs and services they have come to rely on.”

This fifth Charity Navigator 4-star rating adds to other prestigious accolades recently won by HPR for its financial health and quality journalism. Achievements include the Cades Schutte - The Cades Foundation Nonprofit Leadership Award, regional and national Edward R. Murrow Awards, and a national Clarion Award.

Charity Navigator is the largest and most utilized charity rating service that exists anywhere. It  had over 9 million visits to its web site in 2015 alone and impacts at least $10 billion of charitable donations each year. Its team of professional analysts has examined tens of thousands of nonprofit financial documents. This independent evaluator's objective, numbers-based rating system has been used to help guide intelligent giving to over 8,000 of America's charities.
