Kapa is a fiber textile made from the inner bark of a paper mulberry sapling. Used like cloth, it provided protection and adornment for ancient Hawaiians, whose innovations produced kapa unlike any others in the Pacific. An exhibit on view now at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, surveys the revival of this once lost artform. HPR’sNoeTanigawa reports.
“Mohala Hou Ke Kapa / Kapa Blossoms Anew” continues at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center through Sunday, March 9.
