And now an update from voyaging canoes H?k?le‘a and Hikianalia. The sister canoes are continuing to sail through Tonga and arrived in Nuku?alofa, where they were welcomed ashore by local government officials and community members. We checked in with H?k?le‘a navigator Ka‘iulani Murphy, as part of our ongoing series, H?k?le‘a: Voyage of Aloha.

The canoes will remain in Nuku?alofa before sailing to the Kermadec Islands and then onto New Zealand, or Aotearoa, where they’re expected to arrive mid-November. The 15-hundred nautical mile trip across the Pacific marks the first time H?k?le‘a has returned to Aotearoa since 1985.
