American painting first burst onto the world art scene in the 1950’s with energetic abstract paintings by Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, and others. They were followed by a generation of painters who toyed with irony, pop culture, and consumerism into the 2000’s. HPR’sNoeTanigawa reports on a show at the UH Art Gallery that heralds a rebirth of abstraction.
“New New York: Abstract Painting in the 21st Century” continues at the UH M?noa Art Gallery through December 4th.
